Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI®)

The Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI®) is the latest in an evolutionary series of capability maturity models developed by the Software Engineering Institute, part of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, USA. The central premise of the CMMI® is that “the quality of a system or product is highly influenced by the process used to develop and maintain it”.

The CMMI® provides:

Guidelines for improving the organisation’s processes
An integrated approach to process improvement
“Institutionalisation” of the improvements – making them business as usual
A stepped approach to introducing improvements

CMMI® has evolved into three closely related constellations that share 75% of their content but provide specific focus into the Development, Acquisition and Service Management domains respectively.
