SCAMPI (Standard CMMI® based Appraisal Method for Process Improvement) is the name given to the set of three appraisal classes used in conjunction with the CMMI® model to measure an organisation’s process capability.
All three classes of appraisal, from a Class A, which is the most rigorous, down to a Class C, are conducted collaboratively with the organisation being appraised. It is important to obtain senior management sponsorship for the appraisal. The appraisal is conducted by an appraisal team of suitably trained and experienced individuals, drawn from both inside and outside the organisation.
SCAMPI appraisals are conducted using one of the CMMI® models as a reference and whichever class of appraisal is used, a defined appraisal method is followed. The appraisal focuses on use of process in the real world and so is not just a static review of a quality system. The aim is to be as objective as possible, providing the appraised organisation with sufficiently detailed findings to take their process improvement programme forward.
